1st Strawberries coming - I am Soooooo EXCITED!!

Post by Mozelle » Wed Jun 09, 2010 5:09 pm

Hi Everyone,
It's been a while since I've been on, but I've been reading - and so far it sounds like there have been quite a few successfully nests out there!
Congrats!

Tomorrow I'm going to pick up a pair of Strawberry Finches, and I feel like it's Christmas eve and I can't rest :D . I've been doing my research, and am comfortable bringing them home. But all the same - i would LOVE to have any thoughts/stories/suggestions any of you may have with regard to this particular species.
I have been gradually enlarging my "cages" (hubby is handling it much better than requesting a walk-in aviary right off the bat ;-) , and have a decently large flight cage they will have to themselves. I have greenery (silk) up in it, a few perches (widely spaced to allow flight), water and all the goodies. I won't be providing a nest until they've had a bit of time to acclimatize. I know they do enjoy live foods, but there is definitely debate about whether they Require or it on a regular basis - or essentially through the breeding season.
any thoughts?
Clearly I want to breed these little charmers, so anything that can be helpful is Hugely appreciated!!

Thanks !

Congratulations! They are so hard to come by! I wish you very good luck with breeding them.

If you don't want to do the live food thing, you can always try canned mealworms (reptile section of the pet store), or dried bloodworms (from the fish food aisle). Are they wild caught, do you know? If so, then you may want to go the live food route, at least until you get some babies. Then future generations can be fed dried food to see if they will accept it. But most important is to get them to raise that first generation! [-o<

Fran - thank you!

I picked up my strawberries yesterday - and they are so sweet!
And in breeding colour!
The couple who found them for me were Wonderful! With a gorgeous set-up I"m a wee bit envious about ;)

I will use your ideas for feeding. So far they seem comfortably settled - eating seed and drinking.

:D
