Post by Winston1975 » Mon Nov 08, 2010 4:46 pm

I'm confused because my finch looks sick yesterday all puffy, but this morning i was watching her in and off and i saw she laid an egg but wasn't in the nest i guess she just drooped and it got broken on the botton of the cage i took it out and noticed that she was looking all over ...any way i don't know if thats normal or females finches act like that when are pregnant any one can tell me what to do so far i took the egg and i put it in the nest.

If she was all puffed up the day before and then the next day there was an egg at the bottom of the cage I would assume that she was having trouble laying the egg. I can't say for sure but it seems like she may have been egg bound. I would recommend giving her lots of calcium, egg shells, cuttle bone. ect. and there are oils you can put on her vent to help her pass eggs, I'm not positive on what they are but I know people on here do.

Did you happen to notice her sitting at the bottom of the cage as well yesterday? That is another sign of being egg bound, all fluffed up and sitting at the bottom of the cage.

Most times females will become less active several hours before egglaying. Sometimes you will see them pumping their tails in a steady rythum (labor) If your hen was puffed and stressed and dropped the egg from the perch, she may be young/inexperienced/stressed or might have been a little egg bound. Make sure she is at least 8 months, perferably older and has plenty of heat and calcium, vitamin D. Caliboost or calcium plus added to the water may be needed. Also the colder the temps the more egg laying difficulties she will experience. Sometimes just added heat and humidity will be enough.
