I could write a book on keeping finches! It would take too long to tell you everything basic about keeping finches, but just go to the Finch Information Center--everything you probably want to know is there, broken down into categories. After reading all that, if you still have questions, feel free to ask. There is a link to Finch Information Center just to the left of the screen.

When I first got finches I did a lot of reading up on them even before joining this forum... a lot of basics you can find in the Finch Information Center (www.finchinfo.com).
I printed out a ton of stuff from finchinfo.com and read it during my classes at College. Then, once you have the basics start asking questions....

hi bryson
i have been keeping finches and different types of birds for over 25 years and i still dont know everything about them
as the rest of the clan say it is best to read up about them and start with an easy species to keep first and then work up to more exotic species..i am afraid its the only way but its a lot easier than in my day i didnt have the internet

You're on the right track - you joined a forum where you can ask questions and get the people in the know to help you - smart move! You also picked one of the BEST forum on the web {my Opinion}. When I started to breed finches I started getting serious about my birds. It was then that I stopped playing bird keeper and started looking for knowledge on raising my birds. The Finch Information Center is one of the more complete sites that I found for the newbie! You can find all the information you need there.
You didn't say what kind of finch you got! Many of the species are very easy to care for. Keep them clean, keep their water clean {as clean as they will let you, LOL}, feed them seed and some fruit and veg's. Hard boiled egg is really, really good for all species of finches. Make sure they have extra calcium from either crushed egg shells or oyster shell. Give them a place to call their own and start enjoying your bird! Don't panic just because you have an animal you may never of had before - most of them are not that hard to raise, {again depending on the species you have}.
So why not write back to us and tell us a little about your bird, what you're doing to keep him/her feed and caged, and just what we can do to help!
Just saying - Tell me all you know!!! LOL - is not going to get you very much information, I'm afraid!
Just Remember we are here, and you are not alone! Many of us look for postings of people who have problems and need quick answers. And if one of us don't find it fast - There are people like Crystal or Hillary, etc, that are here just to be sure that NO_ONE gets lost between the cracks!
So be confident and write us if you need us - meantime - do some reading!

I have to make a novice stab at this having a fairly prosperous mixed flight:
half pellets, half good seed mix, millet, and *approved fresh produce
cuttlebone at all times, mineral blocks at all times, and crushed eggshell at all times
water always freshened daily (twice if schedule permits)
variety!
