Finch aviary variety and compatibility

Post by Tyler.GiGi » Tue Feb 05, 2008 12:28 am

Hi… I have a question that I have scanned the forums and I haven’t really seen anything that could help me. My hubby is building an aviary for me for Valentines day so I can get more finches. \:D/ I have zebra finches now and I will add to them. I want the biggest variety of colors and sounds that I can get. I found a compatibility chart from a forum here http://www.finchniche.com/f-chart.mgi. Some of the finches I want are not compatible with others. I am not going to breed and this aviary will only be for me and my family to enjoy so is it really a not a good idea? We will only get one pair per species and more than likely a total of 10 - 12 new birds. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Melody

I would stay away from the more aggressive species unless the aviary is going to be REALLY big with lots of cover, and even then I'd figure out what I'd do if a pair just gets too nasty to stay with the others.

I would look at the birds that are compatible with zebra finches, pick the ones you find most appealing, then check that they are compatible with each other. Zebras can be a little pushy, so you want to make sure you're not going to mix one species like say an owl or gould (passive) with something like a Java (not passive) even though the zebra can mix with both of these species. I think a lot of careful research will be the key to your success ;)
