I'm going to a Bird Show next week and I'm still debating on what species and how many to get. I'm wondering if it's better to pair the species or is it okay if I get one of each species that I'm looking at.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

Find out what species you like the best and then get a chart that show compatiability. I know there are several members here that have links to the charts, I unfortunatly do not. In general you can house most finches to gether. There are a few that get aggressive though.

I'd pair if possible - they always seem happiest when they have a member of their own species to hang with (unless they're one of the aggressive species). If they don't have a similar bird to buddy with they may or may not make friends with one of the other birds - depends on the species.

I too would pair, just to assure the birdie has another that speaks his language lol
Have fun at the bird fair...

I would also pair. I have two societies, and two stars that I house together. They get along great, but mostly stay with their own kind.
Plus one baby star who was raised by the societies and so hangs out with them!
Where in Michigan is this bird show?
