How long for canary to sing?

Post by meghann » Sat Mar 01, 2008 11:05 pm

We got our new canary about a week ago, and still have not heard him sing. He's chirped once or twice, but that's about it. I figured he needed time to settle in to his new place, but most canaries we've had it only took them a few days to start singing.

Should I be concerned? Just give him some more time?

Or in the back of my mind I am wondering if he is really a "he".

I think it depends on the bird....my canary started to sing within 24 hours of being in the house, although he will stop singing if something near him changes, such as a new bird coming in to the room or plants moving around... He didn't sing for three weeks after my parakeet died.

I talk to mine a lot and he likes piano music. He will sing up a storm if he has Chopin on the CD player 8) .

If your bird is really stuck you can get a canary singing CD that may start him out. If he is a she then you will get melodic peeps but that is all.

Good luck!

I don't know if this will help but here are two male canaries singing on youtube....maybe if he hears these guys he will start singing unless you have a 'she'! :D

*The first one is a red factor canary singing:

Yeah, we've been playing YouTube videos for him for a few days now. Our little female cordon gets really excited and chirps along, but not a peep out of the canary.

Hmm.
