Male zeb couple!

Post by Phatfinch » Sun Jun 22, 2008 5:59 am

I'm fairly new to zebra finch keeping.. I'd like to know is it normal to get a very close male couple of zeb finches?

There names are Sam, a pied zeb and Brill a fawn.
At first I had 4 males in a small aviary. Sam was friends with another finch but then he became friends with Brill.
The two nest together, preen each other and everyday do 'the dance of love'. They actually try to fertilse each other. Thier dance involves circling around on a branch and singing at each other. Then they both have a go at fertilising each other. The two are always together.

We seperated them for a day once, one in the small aviary and the other in the larger aviary which are next to each other. They called out to each other and hung of the wire. Brill was with a female but showed little interest.

The two boys have been together in the larger aviary for quite some time. During that time a male and female couple have bred twice and the boys have not shown much interest in the female or the female babies..

I guess thier realtionship is a result of being with mostly males but I think they are very close and would never pair up with a female. Our other males always bug females when breeding so we moved them to the a seperate cage, but Sam and Brill we did not have any problems.

It probly happens lots but i just find it very amusing and thought I should tell thier story.... Oh also sam and brill are great nest builders. They have made some great constructions on thier own.

That's a really cute story. I am glad you posted a picture, because I was wondering if possibly one was really a female. But I can see that it is not. I do not have alot of experience with this , but it appears that they are just a very bonded little couple. I have read from others on this forum that two males will imitate the mating ritual. Apparently this is what is happening. Too bad for them.

I'm glad you like the story!
Yep Sam and Brill are definately boys no doubt about it.
Here's a pic you can see both. Thats Brill on the left Sam on the right. Is Sam posing or what? I've I made it my avatar! :D

As i wrote before the two will do the usual zeb mating ritual they both sing and jump from branch to branch in a circle sort of following each other. Then one will stop and the other tries to mate then and then they swap around. :?

They really are like a male and female couple. They will follow each other around, feed together, bathe together and sometimes Brill would get angry when someone else comes near Sam. They are so cute! :D

Phatfinch, there is nothing wrong with males "pairing" up with each other, especially if there aren't any excess females around. Just sit back and enjoy them. If you want to see trouble in paradise add a female to the mix. They will forget they were ever friends and focus on the female - :woman: :sigh:.

So what am I actually saying, there is no reason why they should not pair with females when introduced so you can breed them if you want to.

Hey I love that they have paired up. Its a match made in heaven!
I was just wondering if it was a normal occurance which it seems it is. :)

Hmmm i dunno about these two they are pretty close.. we had a female in there for quite a awhile and they didnt seem all that keen on her...

Maybe I'll adopt them some eggs and save them hassle of a major spilt up.

It would be interesting to see if the two would be good foster parents.

Actually I did try it on them... they sat on the eggs during the day but didnt sleep on them at night for some reason they slept somewhere else...

I should give them another go I reckon they could do it

Cute Zebras! My two males get along wonderfully with each other....and don't bother my other finches at all...they are very sweet but are intensely curious about anything new in the cage and are the first ones to check it out. :D

I've heard of males being inseparable before, E.G Cockatiel's etc..
It would be good to see the ritual on video.
