Naming finches

Post by KarenB » Sun May 04, 2014 10:05 pm

Okay, I have names for every one of my other animals (4 dogs, 2 cats, 3 Lineolated Parakeets, 2 Senegals, even Mr. Beta), but I have yet to name any of my finches. I just call them Mr. and Mrs. whatever they are, since I only have one pair of each. It may be lame, but I'm not sure I could come up with that many names, or remember them. What do you all call yours, if anything?

Hi Karen B,

My birds (and other pets!) have always found their own names. I have one bird, Kevin, I named after one of the guys at work, as their personalities seemed similar (Kevin is an old, Cranky man now - 12 years old). I named my bird, Beaky, after one of the other birds mentioned on this forum - I loved the name. My third bird, Merlin, was totally bald when I got him (he'd been picked on by other finches at the pet store), and he looked like an old man (ie "Merlin" the wizard). It was shortened to Merl after a while.

I've also had other birds:
*Queenie - a female Zebbie, a right little bossy boots, and a real sweetie
*Meep Meep - a male Zebbie, very cute, never stopped talking
* Hughie - Male Zebbie, named him after Hugh Laurie

You'll find the right names!

Cheers

Everybody in my house has a name, carefully thought about and chosen for them. They match their color, their kind, their companions.
We do remember who's who.

Societies--Rusti, Dusty, Moptop, Oreo, Zorro (passed on: Two Stripe, Dancer, CC (for Chocolate Chip))
Spices--Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Paprika, Cayenne
Zebras--Twinkle, Sprinkle, Piper, Princess, Blackie, Star, Pearl, Flash, Splash
Owls--Hoot and Howl
B&W Mannikins--Yin and Yang
Parrotlets--Blueberry and Cricket, Jellybean and Gumdrop
Budgies--Sun, Sky, Thunder, Prairie, Jungle, Lake, Snowfall, Snowdrift, Sprite, Smoke, Bluebell, Lily, Buttercup (passed on: Forest, Frost, Snowflake, Zebra, River aka George)
Dog--Bo
Cats--Ferrari, Lamborghini (passed on Mi-ke (meekay), Peaches (Peaches and Cream with Mold (hubby was in college...)), Fat Callie)
Degus--Chitter and Chester
Guinea pigs--Moonlight and Meteorite
Hedgehog--Thistle
Fish--Hermoine and Shine
Former Hamsters--Mrs. Darth Fluffypants Sootplow ("Momma"), Fluffernutter, Cinnamon, Belle, Patch.

Then, wild creatures who visit regularly also get named, Thing 1 and Thing 2 are raccoons (things that go bump in the night), Esmerelda and Zebediah the squirrels, Mutant Chickadee, Lil' Bunny, Damn Gopher, and, of course, Swampsquatch (who is heard, but not seen, and the legend grows.....)

We're HUGE on names and I love reading about how others got their names!
I believe that each animal already has a name. I just wait for them to "tell" me what it is!

Our zebra finches are....
Females: Ivy, Priscilla
Males: Jackson, Presley, Molly Sue
Baby: Squeeperton (aka Squeepers)

Molly Sue is a funny story. We were trying to think of a name so my husband and I were watching him, contemplating. He kept singing and my husband thought his song sounded like he was saying "Molly Sue, Molly Sue, Molly Sue." It didn't matter he was a boy. It just stuck.

We also have a male cat named Eliza. Eliza was a feral kitten that we rescued around 9 mos of age. Always kept her tail down and acted very female, so I didn't see the boy bits until the name was really engrained. Eliza just fits. Calling her a "he" feels plain wrong. Yet I no longer see her as fully female anymore. She's sort of a gender neutral kitty. LOL

Our dogs are: Piggy, Malley, Fiona, Caitlin, Gus and Kiley.

Our cats are: JJ, Ben, Tilly, Milly, Annie, Callum, Jules, Bernadette, Eliza, Baxter, Jaime, Tobin, Katrina, Maxwell (a girl), Shiloh and Sylvan.

There are also outdoor cats, and "regular" possums and raccoons who come to our feeding station, all of whom have names based on personality/appearance. There's Maximus (Maxwell is his daughter; her name is a nod to him), CC and Lux are cats. Handie, Sophia, Sydney, Scruffy, Scruffers and Scrufferby are raccoons. Ophelia and Mister FuzzyMan are possums.
Herman is the twerpy but adorable armadillo who digs up the yard.

ETA -- I see Nerien has a hedgehog! Thistle is such a great name for a hedgehog!
We had one too! Her name was Tulgey (something from Alice in Wonderland. I think there's a hedgehog in the Queen of Hearts garden? I don't recall the origin exactly. It was a friend's hedgehog and she got tired of her and gave her to us.)
Humum to....
13 Zebra Finches....and 2 squeeps!
3 Society Finches
6 Gouldians
1 Weaver
1 Pintail Whydah
2 Cockatiels
2 Parakeets

....along with 1 MinPin, 1 Pug, 1 JRT, 1 Yorkie, 2 Chihuahuas and 15 cats.

Wow, you all have great names for your critters. All of ours seemed to own a name and was called by that name from day one. Nerien, I love the names you picked. I may have to steal one or two. I have a standard poodle, Madeleine; a Boston Terrorist, Charles aka Charlie Brown the Clown; two Maltese, Mia Bella and Gemma Jamma. The Senegals are Sammie and Sydney; the Lineolated Parakeets are Sam the Linnie Man, Buttercup and Pippin. The cats are Josie and Ceasar, and then there is Mr Beta the beta.

I don't have mine all named yet either! The 2 older ones are Tommy & Teddy that's all I have so far. But anyone who names all of their clown loaches needs to name their zebras. :)

I'm a musician, so I'm thinking they'll prolly end up with music names.

Dogs: Piper & Noelle
Cat: Ditto
Clown Loaches: Clint, Madelyn, Pony, Two Spot, Hughie, Charlene, Reese
Many other unnamed fish.
Some birds are not meant to be caged, that's all. Their feathers are too bright, their songs too sweet and wild.

Some of mine have names and some don't.
When I find myself talking to them individually a lot, then names seem to materialize for them. Anyone in a breeding cage, hospital cage, etc, who gets extra attention seems to get a name. My first Javas found names. Some youngsters with big personalities also get names.
As for the rest - not so much.
I don't name anybody I may end up parting with in the future. :(

I love reading the names and the stories. I love the name CT. I could have used that name for my tyrant 10 year old black face that has terrorized every mate he ever had, save one he was with two years. I've named him....every bad word there is...and it changed weekly. That was until my grandson named him Waldo. He really does look like a waldo with his black/orange and white. I had a Zebra Nonny, from "Much ado about nothing" from Shakespear meaning "foolish joy." It was fitting. I have my 10 year old fawn we call "Little fawn." My parakeet is Jo Jo named after my nephew who died at 25. I have a zebra who must be mixed with something who has the weirdest honking cry we call "Homer honker" from Sesame street. Zebras Molly Sunshine, Alistair, Mumford, Phoebe, Benny, Bert, Betty Lou, Biff, Bip, Bugsby, Clancy, Cookie, Farley, Frazzle, Grundgetta, Harvey, Juliet, Romeo, Spice Finches, Little Bird, Meryl, Ralphie, Prairie Dawn, Ruby, Rosita, Zoe, Yip Yip. We got a lot of names from Sesame Street. I have many I don't name, when I plan on selling them outright. I agree, they already have names. Our Australian Cattle/Border Collie is Kady, our Poodle/Dachshund is Jillybean...and that is all!
