My Dog
My dog is just infatuated with the birds. sometimes when they chirp and sing he will come running in and look up at the cage. He will even try to see in by getting up on his hind legs. The cage is on top of a 4 high. Anyone have pets that show interest??
We had another dog that went nuts for animals on tv. Horses were the worst. We would have to change the channel. He would then try to look behind the tv for the animals. He was a hoot.

Re: My Dog
My dogs (pure bred american pit bull and boston terrier mix) have been raised with birds all their lives, and are completely desensitized to them. The only time they show any interest in the birds is if they are free flying around the house or if they drop egg food on the floor.
My newest cat on the other hand is providing more of a challenge. We have to keep squirt bottles within reach all the time she's allowed access to the living and family rooms where the birds are. She is getting better though. We only have to squirt her about ten times a day now instead of 200. lol Bob

Re: My Dog
We also keep a spray bottle on hand at all times. My dogs think they have a giant tv and lie down to watch the birds (I have an outside aviary). My cats are another story though... The spray bottle definitely does help teach them a bit of respect for the birds but it's not fool proof. If your birds are inside, I definitely wouldn't leave the dog unsupervised with them. Rather safe than sorry.

Ha, I can understand the cat issue. I have watched Tweety and Sylvester for 50 years. That bad ole' puddytat.
I guess I was not expecting the dogs to care much. It's not a food source and not climbing in their trees in the yard.
Luckily my cage is on top of a 4 high file cabinet and out of reach.

My dog totally acts as if he doesn't even know they exist. The only time he goes near them is when he is on my heels while I am changing food and water.

Re: My Dog
My dog shows an interest...by licking her mouth and staring at them longingly! She's also very jealous if I go to take care of them. She also loves to lick up their bird seed they scatter about from their cages, but it does not agree with her stomach...which does not make my husband very happy. My parakeet on the other hand is mesmerized by my dog...Kady. I have one of the Tree Top plastic sided bird cages and he runs back and forth to get the dogs attention. He wants so much to play with her. He has no idea he would be her snack if I let that happen.

Re: My Dog
I have a min pin, Mallory, who was a mama rescued from a puppy mill situation. So when she came to us, she'd never been inside a house before. She spent her entire life in a cage (but you'd never know it except for the fact that she's very okay with solitude and is not a velcro dog like the other 5! She's the happiest, sweetest girl ever!)
Anyways, when we brought her home, she immediately noticed the bird room and would sit there watching them for hours on end, tilting her head back and forth.
She's a big TV watcher too, so now in the afternoons, she splits her time between watching TV and watching the birds. It's very cute.

Re: My Dog
My own pet cat, a shorthair named Marley, is very good with small animals and he just sits near and watches the birds. My Grandmother's female cat, though, who also lives here is very different and a born hunter who just lives to kill them, so she is locked downstairs at all times.
