Usps shipping
Wondering about the success of USPS shipping. I am not very keen on shipping of birds or any animal for that matter. I am always afraid of the worst, not to mention the stress factor for these poor animals. Who knows what they truly go through during the shipping process. Anyone have any problems receiving birds being shipped to you this way?

Re: Usps shipping
50/50 I think if the birds are healthy, they usually do fine.
I had a Healthy normal gouldian hen shipped who arrived fine. I also had a shipment of two goulds, one dilute, and one blue cock (was supposed to be a hen) Apparently the broker did not know much about birds, as he shipped the wrong sex, AND, shipped it in the middle of a heavy molt. The bird was stressed and sick when it arrived, and never recovered, despite my best efforts. The dilute was fine.
I think I will request airline shipping from now on. I think it would definately be worth the price difference.

Re: Usps shipping
USPS shipping is still illegal, though it is done by many breeders and brokers. Just be aware that the originating Post Office may refuse the shipment, or the receiving Post Office may have a problem with it. I have shipped USPS only once, to someone who did not live near any major airport. The shipment was lost for a time, took almost 48 hours to arrive. I was a wreck, the birds were absolutely fine.
I have only had one shipment sent to me USPS from Atlanta to Dallas, and it was here in one day. My local Post Office called me, because the shipment arrived after hours. They had me come to the back door to pick up my birds, and I think they were as excited as I was!
I deal with more expensive waxbills now, so I would never consider anything but airline shipping. They arrive the same day, much less stress. However, I can understand when someone just wants one little Zebra or Society, it is difficult to justify spending the extra money for airline shipping.
If you opt for airline shipping, United is terrific with their PetSafe program. They are very experienced with the birds, cost less than $100 for a shipment.

There are two major couriers when it comes to shipping: United and Delta. Delta tends to be about half again as expensive as United as well as much less caring about the packages they carry. (Source: over 20 years shipping with Delta and just over a year shipping with United)
I know almost all of my local (Detroit) United staff and they are all very caring and helpful when I come to pick up birds.
United's main hubs are Houston, Chicago, and Newark so there is a very good chance that if you ship birds, they will go through one of those three airports. USPS may travel through many stops and the likelihood of something going wrong goes up exponentially.
SO...if you have the extra many, it is well worth the insurance of paying that extra cash to make sure your birds have a short and happy trip.

They are going to use whatever airline serves their nearest airport, but United has a huge route system. I see that you are not far from Newark airport. I just shipped birds from Dallas/Fort Worth to Newark, and there are many non-stop flights between those two cities. If you purchased from a breeder on the west coast, United has a big presence there as well.Harley2013 wrote: Not all breeders or brokers use United I would imagine correct?

Re: Usps shipping
I've received birds by USPS and by airline a few times and never had a bad result.
I prefer using the airline, though, if given the choice. Relocation is stressful for the birds under the best of circumstances. The less time spent in transit the better.
