Sexing Societies
I just acquired a 'female' society. She is the only society I have at the moment, but don't know how to verify if she is in fact a she at all. I have heard some noise out of her in the last two weeks, but no songs like one would expect from a male... however, as I said, 'she' is the only society I have so Im not sure how that would effect gender determination.

Re: Sexing Societies
The best way i found to sex societies is by having a few birds (3 at least) and monitor them. The males will sing, they will stand up and straight and chirp while the females will just chirp now and again without and actual continuous song.
Bird species bred up till now : Zebras, Bengalese, Javas, Diamond doves, Canaries.

And they do the poofy dance which is too cute!
He may not have a reason to sing with no company, if its a he. A male will sing for another male or female. My 4 boys sing to each other but I do have one dominant who sings the most. But they all sing and dance to each other. Girls wouldn't do that.

Hi Ken.
Female Societies, will chirp. They sound a little bit like crickets.
Males, on the other hand will sing and dance.
Look on line for song and dance of a male Society, and play it to your bird. Males will respond, by puffing themselves into a funny pear shape and doing their own song and dance. Females will just look interested.
Trust me, it works. I've even tried this out in Pet Shops and it works. People think your a nut job when you do this, but who cares...
