Upgrading Containers

As my flock continues to grow, I'm finding that I really need to upgrade to a bigger container for my seeds. I'm having a difficult time finding one that I think will protect the seeds from moths and whatnot. It doesn't help that I'm looking at containers and keep second guessing myself, just because I don't want to spend money just for it not to work.

So, I putting it to you guys with a fair amount of birds. Where should I be looking for a new container?

Raleighwheels, are you talking storage containers or feeding containers?, what ever the case I use 5 x 25 litre buckets for storage and for feeding a number of feed hoppers of different sizes depending on the rate of consumption of various seed. I have over 100 birds in 9 different cages.

I personally like this container that I'm using. Its a air tight container and it's suppose to be moisture resistant. Has like "foam" and the edge so once the lib is set down and locked air can not get it. It has worked well for me so far. I have found that it will probably hold around 40 lbs of feed. I haven't tested 50 because i haven't bought that much at one time.

I got it from Walmart for about 17.00 in the storage section. There are different sizes of them

I have been fortunate so far not to have picked up any seed with moths so far. " fingers crossed not to jink myself now ". But you can get some human grade Diamataceous earth that will kill the moths, larvae, and eggs. It will also help worm your birds by chocking them up into tiny pieces in the intestines.

Diamataceous earth measurements per pound of seed I'm going to let someone else give you exact info. As i have only heard of it and not done it.....

I also have around 65 birds... its also a GOOD visual so you know when your getting low on feed...

Oh and i also like these small containers for storing like grit or herb salad... i don't like all those pesky resealable bags. Dollar tree is where i get them... cheap but very economical for me and they stack . I even put my frozen chitted seed in them and freeze them they work fine...

josh1810 I also use those smaller containers for all extra things I might use or feed. My dollar store doesn't have them, but I got mine at Walmart, they don't carry them all the time either.

For seed storage, I got these containers at Petsmart. I waited till they had a 50% off sale. They come in different sizes, the large one holds 50# of seed easily, perhaps more but I haven't tried that.

re the jars Josh pictured; I use the plastic jars like that (about the same size as Josh's) from Dry Roasted Peanuts. Work great for freezing in too. & they're free......if you like to eat peanuts

Re the "D" earth; I would like to know where to get it & the measurement to use. I always freeze my seeds & millet spray to eliminate bugs or moths

I just use a recycled plastic egg food container that can hold about 2 kilos of seeds when feeding my finches. My stored seeds (10 kilos) are placed in a plastic pail (w/ cover). Both are water/air tight.

If you use diatomaceous earth, be sure to get the food grade. You will see DE for sale in gardening stores or for use in swimming pools, but not all of those are food grade, it should say this on the label. As far as how much to use, http://www.friskyfinches.com gives directions.
