nest removal
I was wondering about when its o.k to remove the nest from the cage? My zebra finch fledglings are 20days old and have all been out of the nest. They return to it regularly and well one chick just doesn't like to come out to often. I just don't want to take it away to soon.
I just want to remove it to discourage another round of breeding with the parents for now if I can. They are a great pair and are doing an awesome job raising the little ones.
Thanks in advance
Trisha

Hi Trisha.
If all the chicks have flredged, then it should be fine to remove the nest. When did the reluctant youngest one fledge? I'm assuming, that that's the one who doesn't like to leave the nest.

Re: nest removal
Yes you are correct its the youngest. He/she fledged yesterday. If I need to wait its o.k , I was just unsure as to what age was acceptable for removing it.
Thanks for the reply

I would give baby a day or two to get more comfortable with the big world outside the nest. Once little one feels more secure, I would remove the nest.

Re: nest removal
Thank you, you guys all rock for advice.
This morning all the fledgelings are out and about. I know I won't be able to tell colouring until after the first molt but so far two of the chicks are lighter then the others. Also I'm pretty sure at least one is a male as it has been attempting to sing. He sounds like a humming bird male doing the breeding dive ritual. It makes me laugh everytime.

Re: nest removal
The easiest way is to see the leg thickness - after 4-5 days you can already tell who is male / female, I took nest out after they have fledged, normally take it out 3 days later.

I've never read this before, Chirp. Can you explain more? Pictures?

Aspen
You can leave the nest in and just remove any eggs that are laid until all the fledglings are out and about.

Re: nest removal
Thanks, Steve. I was wondering about the leg thickness and how to tell gender that way.
