Strawberry male moving tail and wings constantly?
Sally
During the day when he is eating chirping perching, his tail and wings move constantly. Is this normal for strawberry males or something wrong?

I saw it on FB...definitely need Sally's expert advice on this one! I have zero experience with strawberries and this may be a male courting behavior, for all I know! Who knows??? Kind of looks like wing/tail flitting to me, with a touch of minor tail bobbing.

That is more movement than I am used to seeing, but I don't know why he is doing it. The flying back and forth is very typical of waxbills, they are so flighty, and any time I point a camera at mine, they get even more nervous. I really can't help with this. Is he eating and drinking normally?

If he was wild caught, he may be upset about being caged.

Yes he is eating and drinking with no problem. Not puffed not sleeping during the day or anything. No sick bird signs.Sally wrote: That is more movement than I am used to seeing, but I don't know why he is doing it. He is wild caught and had been in a large aviary almost 6 months with others of his kind. I am assuming the temporary cage they are in is too small and didn`t feel safe so i decorated with more plants and put some leafs inside the cage. He is chirping singing flirting and very friendly towards the female and the lavenders.
Fingers crossed waiting for the large cages. They should be shipped next week and i will probably have them at the end of this week. so 2 more weeks in the small cages.

That could very well be all it is, just not comfortable in a smaller cage. Hopefully, this will ease up with a larger cage. It has to be a big shock to these wild caught to adjust to cages.

Re: Strawberry male moving tail and wings constantly?
Metinemre - I was thinking the same thing when I watched the video. Occasionally I see some of my birds (especially the canary and the gouldians) show a similar behavior (mostly flicking their wings) and then fly back and forth the full length of my aviary (16 feet) at a pretty high speed. I always figured they just need to burn excess energy. This cage is probably just too small for a wild caught bird. With hope he will settle down in a big cage. Good luck with him, strawberries are wonderful birds.
