Mine is a pleasure to have around the house and he really lightens things up with his song. They are also pretty widely available, I usually see about eighty of them crammed up in my local petsmart, and while I don't think petsmart is the best place to purchase birds it could be used as a last resort, especially when you don't have any other birds that you are risking. They will also sing by themselves-in fact mine usually waits for all the other birds to fall asleep before he starts to sing.
Reason most dont mention it is because everyone on here seems to have flights with multiple species. Green singers are mean and aggressive with others so most dont have them because they cant have them.

An obscene number of chicks and eggs
And an incredibly rare St. Goldena Breast finch

Right, well on their own or with other pushy species they do just fine (at least mine is lol.) My green-singer is a very passive guy, in fact he avoids the two zebras housed with him. I have never seen him attack another finch, but I think it is because he doesn't have a female. Then again I may have just gotten lucky with a very very passive green-singer. After all, every bird does have it's own personality.

So true. My cubans are as sweet as can be and my red-throated parrot finches are evil.

I have to say my lone Green Singer is really sweet. :) I've never seen him try to attack any other birds in my aviary.

Ok. Here is the scoop. Putting 2 male canaries in the same cage is asking for trouble. Only one is needed. He will sing his little song while listening to the water. It for some reason is a clue for them to sing. He does NOT need another bird with him. He will be perfect alone. If you want to get him company a female is the choice of a pal, but remove all eggs or you will be a daddy...LOL. However a male canary will not die of lonliness. With the water going in there in a fountain he will be happy. Even opening the windows will keep him happy. I don't have canaries however when I was little we did. One single male. He lived for a long time and was happy as sin in his environment. I also agree with the once in a while let him fly in that room for a few minutes. He will be happy with that and will love you for giving him the chance to do so. The best of luck with your new baby whatever you choose. I am sure you will be most happy with any decision you make :)
