SAFFRON FINCH

Post by birddad » Mon Jan 22, 2007 6:57 pm

Hi all there is a cute little saffron finch that is up for adoption at a lps and I am debating if i should adopt him. I have been reading that they are aggressive but it depends on the bird. This little guy has a crippled foot. I have a 30lx22wx30H cage so I think it is large enough. Any thoughts on saffrons? Any possible companions for him
thanks

Hi, bird dad! I have a pair but am curious how they will get along with my other birds. Did you get this one, and does it have that whole cage all to himself? They have a pretty chirp and such lovely coloring. I put a mini carrot with the greens on top (from the organic market) in one of those test-tube type waterers, upside down so the greens stay fresh all day, and place a perch where they can eat the tops. They nibble them clean every time! Also works for piece of lettuce or kale, with the bottom thinned so that it fits into the glass thing, and these birds seem to love greens more than any of my other birds! Anyway, I am enjoying them. Hope to keep learning about them from reading everyone else's suggestions! Happy spring~ Lisa

What a great idea for keeping the greens fresh longer! The biggest problem with feeding greens is that they wilt so fast. I will definitely try your method--it gives the birds all day to play with those greens, and I think that for their mental health, the more we can give them to do, the better off they are.
