Jar feeders

Has anyone used jar feeders before? I have like 9 of these from years ago when I had lovebird pairs. I have tried every kind of "cups" and the hopper.

The hopper I may attempt at another time. They manage to sit in the cup no matter how small and end up pooping in it, bowls they just sit and poop in...I have considered hanging feeders but most my birds are in 30 x 18 x 18 cages. The only birds that are neat are the Gold Breast, they do not poop in their bowls or cups.

I would give them a go. Shouldn't be much of a difference from the tube feeders.

I have a couple that I bought at the bird mart. The tops are glass like mason jars..... I love them for using charcoal, miracle meal and other supplements in my aviary.

Look to big for that size cage

I put them in the cages after watching them hopping in and out of cups and the seed flying out everywhere. If you position them in the corner of the front of the cage it takes up just a tiny bit more room than a cup would.

I watched them and they can not turn completely around on the edge and poop in the food. They hop across the grate and eat at the edge of the dish part. I have aspen under the grate so hopefully betewwn the jar feeder and grate/aspen the mess will be less.

Ideally I want to disturb them a little as possible some are going to nest.

I use them in the aviaries. I have noticed that with some mixes(especially those with fruits or pellets) the humidity get to the mix before the birds empty them out. So I use them as backups and every morning I dump the shallow dishes and tilt these to refill the shallow dishes. If they eat all of the dishes empty then these are a backup that they can munch.
For straight millet or canary seed they work great outdoors.
In the cages I have the wire grates and most of my birds shovel out the seed to get to their favorite so I find it too wasteful.

I think I will try theses for a bit. When they have young I may re-introduce the hoppers with the "cup" attached to it. Maybe the young will use it and the parents will follow their lead.
