Cleaning my oven

Post by StevePax » Thu Jul 19, 2007 2:39 pm

OK, my oven really needs to be cleaned. It's a self-cleaning oven. My birds are in the living room, adjacent to the kitchen, but with a wall in between. That wall is only a partial wall - it has about 2 feet or so above it before you get to the ceiling (does that make sense? So there's a gap above that wall), as well as there is a space to walk from the kitchen to the living room, of course.

So, fill me in - what do I need to do to keep from killing my birds when I clean my oven on the self-cleaning cycle? I can run the ventilation hood over the oven, and I have a fan that I can put in the kitchen blowing anything from the oven towards an open window. But I'm paranoid - I'd hate to have a clean oven and then find 9 dead birds the next day from the fumes.

Any tips?

I don't have a self-cleaning oven...

...but I either the birds into another room while I'm spraying the chemical...and when I'm wiping it out...

...and I open all the doors and windows for max. ventilation until I can't smell it anymore...

...oh yeah...and I only do it in the summer time...if it gets dirty in the winter I only use soap and water...
A bird in the hand...requires some serious washing up...

I have a self-cleaning oven, too, but my birds are outside the house. However, the oven cleans itself with extra high heat, and the odors you get would be from grease, etc., burning off. No chemicals involved, as far as I know. I don't even get much odor when it is cleaning, except just a little burning smell. I wouldn't think it would hurt your birds, but I can't really say for sure.

Supposedly smoke alone can be harmful (birds have a much more sensitive/efficient respiratory system than we do)... but I do not know how much smoke will be generated in this instance. To be safe, if at all possible, try to remove the birds to a different room or outside during the self cleaning process.
