But isn't the black on the breast a typical zebra marking? In any case, a very pretty bird :) .

zebra finches already have that marking on there chest.
Society Finches, Fire Finches, Strawberry Finches, Owl Finches, Plum Head Finch, Goldbreast Waxbill Finches, Orange Cheek Waxbill Finches, Blue Capped Cordon Finches, Zebra Finches, Bronzewing Mannikin Finches, Red-Cheek Cordon Blue Finches, and Button Quail

okay. so that is probably what happened and the zebra just laid an egg in their. But the zebras did not have so profound of a black marking and the hatchling were all fuzzy and looked so different from a previous clutch of theirs that my husband was convinced that they were hybrids.

I on the other hand all along have believed they were zebras.
They are both males and sing their little hearts out all the time.

I am going to take a pic of the second one which is so different.

Like I said, I've never seen a Shaft/Zeb hybrid but the black "spot" below the beak is not completely uncommon in Zebras, so I'm fairly convinced its a Zebra.
