I agree. I wait for about 30 days or so and then, usually the pair stops sitting. Then, I check the eggs. I have a pair of Society's fostering some eggs now and I don't hear begging and they've been sitting tightly for 3 weeks, so if nothing seems different in the next week, I'll check the nest.

Angela&Shalamar.....are your birds indoors?

Could be lack of d3 causing infertile eggs

they are indoors but this is the only pair having issues breeding and they get egg food and natural light (windows are open) so light isn't filtered. I really think the male has issues from previous home as I"m pretty sure he got nothing but seeds there. THe other pair just fledged chicks and the male is the full brother to the female who's eggs are infertile so I doubt that its the hen. I'm gonna look for another male to pair her with and see if i"m right.

Sally -- That's a crazy story about sitting on the empty nest! I agree with your "must be too old" assessment. Poor kids seem rather confused!

Takoda -- Any update? Any little fuzzies born? Or have you gotten a chance to peek?

My guys will always leave the nest when I open the cage for free fly time. Sometimes it's less than a minute for a couple quick laps around the room to stretch their wings, but it's enough for a peek!
They'll also leave the nest when it's time for breakfast or dinner, when I put the fresh foods in there. Sometimes it's just a few seconds before the other mate will pop into the nest to take over, but it's enough for a peek!

My current parents let me take the entire nest out to peek, but they're both quite tame. I have a new girl whom I haven't tamed yet and a male who's just not enthused about being tamed so I definitely wouldn't try that with them for fear they'd be hugely traumatized or abandon the nest entirely.

Angela&Shalamar -- Sorry to hear about your breeding troubles! That male's old seed diet could definitely be the problem. It will be interesting to see what happens when you pair the hen with a new boy.
