BillD: no problem. I am learning alot just from reading ALL the replies..

I was wondering what would be the most suitable for a bird bath? One that is open or a closed in dome bird bath?

I also looked into a Vision bird cage as I can get it in my area.. Any thoughts? The one I was looking at has small spaced bars and it includes a starter kit for finches??

Is there any problem with a wicker nest or should I use something else?

What about corn cob for the bottom of the cage instead of newspaper / gravel? I understand the corn cob is better???

Ground oyster shell is better to use for a calcium supplement? Is that for both male and female??

Sorry for all the questions, I am just excited and I am planning my shopping list.. I hope you don't mind answering them??

I recomend HQ 16421 double fight cage while the cost is high it has lots to recomend it. It is 64inches long buy 21inches deep and 36inches high it has a removeable wall dividing it in half. It is on wheels and has a storage shelf. This helps you to clean the cage by putting the wall in locking the birds in one half while you clean the other. There is also room for plants which the birds will like.

this site carrys this cage. you can also google HQ cages. I find the paying for Quality is best in the long run. I have 3 unused cage be cause i bought to small in the begining. I wasted $100.00 by not buying the hq cage first

Don't worry about the questions. That's how we learn and I think everyone in this forum will give you suggestions. Know I have learned a lot from them and I don't think they consider me annoying for asking questions.. yet.. hehe..

I just introduced a covered bath to the outside of my cage, they haven't taken to it yet. They still take a bath in the water cups in the morning, but that's what they are used to.

I have a cage similar to the one James posted and I like it alot and would recommend. I like the idea of being able to roll it around when I finally get started on my aviary. It is wide enough for them to fly and I think my finches are happy. I just need to get the nest box thing figured out too.

Keep asking questions.

Erin,you can try posting an ad on craigslist,that you are looking for society finches.Also there is a yahoo group finches and canaries,people post ads to sell and buy on there.Do a search for yahoo groups finches @ canaries.Just sign up and then post a message of what you are looking for.I got some good buys on there.Tom

Erin: with sociaty finchesa small bowl 6 inches across and 1 inch deep is just fine I have 13 sociaties and they like to bath together, some get in the bowl and splash around, and others line the rim and take showers, It is a trip watching them. I have a post called "bath time" that you should read, Dfcauley also has a post with the same name, both are under "finch chat".for some one new to here it would pay to read all the old post as well. there is a ton of info on this web site.

Not true about the human scent. You give them too much credit. Don't worry, if you put the egg in the nest she will accept it, once she decides the nest is OK. And that may just be the trigger.

Erin: I think you will find your birds will take a bath wherever they feel comfortable doing so, with whatever they have available (mine use the water cups). I think the cage that James has linked would be ideal for you. I have one similar, but If I were to do it over, that is the one I would get. That one is much better than mine.

Franny: Thanks. Guess that's an old 'wives' tale about handling chicks and eggs from a nest.
