That is what I use: hand or net. If they get out of the cage, canary breeders suggest you use a tea towel tossed over them. The only problem with that is that finches are so much smaller than canaries, they may be injured when you're trying to pick them up. Someone told me they turn off the lights.. the birds cant see in the dark and they catch them that way. Hmmmm, guess they have night vision.

Well i for one don't have night vision but I keep my birds on porch when I turn out the lights they go to roost I can take a small flashlight with a small amount of light shine it toward the floor just enough to see where their at and reach in and pick them up try it . A lot less stress on them and me.

I tried the lights off technique once for one of my flight cages (6' long, 2' wide, 5' high).

There was an egg bound hen who had fallen off the perch during the night but was still able to fly away. So I turned off the light to try grabbing her from whichever perch she landed on (I have a night light so can see their figures at night). As soon as I made noise from opening the door to the flight every bird took off - and crashed into everything and each other! So I turned on the light and got her with a butterfly net.

I use my hands for cages and a net for my flight cages and escapees.

My favourite nets after many previous designs. As the bird hit the back of the net the net drops straight away not allowing the bird to escape.
