The eggs you buy for food are non fertle eggs. the layers in the egg house have never seen a cock (Rooster). they lay an egg and it rolls out of their cage on to a belt that takes them through a bath and straight to the packing machines they can be in the store in less than 24hrs. those hens are in cages smaller than finch cages 12x12x12. I've seen them. All they do is eat and lay.

I only buy "free roaming organic" eggs and can only hope that these hens are NOT in tiny cages... :(
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

I don't have the heart to toss unless I'm sure they're infertile.

I must be the only pro-choice individual :)
Or the only one that feels comfortable to admit it amongst so many others that are not!

I usually don't participate in this type discussion. It seems rather pointless to me, as you are either pro-life or pro-choice, and highly unlikely to change your views from a posting on the forum. But I can't let you hang out there alone, Tiffany--I am also pro-choice, always have been. I also toss eggs when I don't want them to be incubated.

I didn't realize this was turning into a "do you or don't you toss eggs" question... yes I toss eggs when I don't want any chance of babies - ie too many Zebra or Society fids already. I suppose that makes me Pro Choice as well.

So in that case, for those with Societies or Zebras - what does everyone do with these eggs when they keep laying in the cage (without any nests)?

I am not afraid to admit that when my zebra decides to lay her next eggs I will be removing them and replacing them with the infertile eggs that my 2 female shaftails laid a while back (I kept them just in case). That way if my shaftails lay 8 eggs again I will try and see if maybe she will foster a few. I am beginning to think that with 8 eggs in the nest my shaftail was unable to incubate properly, today is day 15 since she laid her last egg and none have hatched.

So yes I guess that I am divided pro-life and pro-choice, depending on the situation... Now I feel like a hypocrite.

Gosh, this wasn't a moral survey about who tosses and who keeps.
It was to inquire about others opinions about thier thoughts on when life starts in the egg.
Read the question again..... It does not ask if you are pro choice or pro life.... It ask WHEN DOES LIFE OF A FERTILIZED EGG START :!:
I guess people get over sensitive about these issues, we are talking eggs here people. #-o My later point was I am such a big hearted animal lover that yes... I try to save them all..... I hate to not give one a chance. If I have too many I practice bird birth control ... called seperation/abstenance  (any eggs continued to be laid are then infertile)
Hopefully no one will pass judgement on another forum member here over an egg. I mean...really.
After all, we were given dominion over all the animals of the earth :D

Sorry, I hope it wasn't me who turned this into a "moral survey." :?
And I swear I would never judge anybody for tossing or not tossing eggs or being pro-life or pro-choice. I'm pretty convinced that almost nobody is entirely one or the other at all times, me included. Like I said I also took the buttons' egg away and I think it's actually better to toss some eggs instead of having too many birds and not knowing what to do with them...

Sorry if I got carried away but I thought this discussion was very interesting and I don't think that anybody judged or was judged here... :)

I agree :)
I didn't see any judging or anything, and I found it very interesting as well - actually, it did make me think a little more about it after reading Mike's post - because he is right, really, the moment of fertilization really dictates the start of life, and I guess it's hard to see that in an egg where it can sit for days and still be viable but not develop :)

So it seems easy at first to think, well it's not alive until you start incubating it!
But I see it from the other side now..

I haven't seen any judgements whatsoever being passed, I only just realized while reading all of the posts that I am really on the fence.

We do however, all seem to believe in one way or another that life begins before the fertilization otherwise we wouldn't be thinking of putting the eggs under societies, or shipping them from state to state or country to country.(I'm reading over what I just wrote, and I hope it makes sense)

This is probably the most benign conversation I've ever read on the issue.

As long as we accept this anthropocentric belief we will never accept animals as anything more than property.

Yes, the courts consider our pets property too. I once worked at a grooming salon and had too leave due to the owners attitude. She said..... if a dog dies here then they can only sue me for the cost of the dog....on the other hand if I cut the dog then I have to pay up the x@% in vet bills.
Unfortunately a lot of people think of animals as property too.... that is why so many are discarded like an old sofa and end up at the shelters or worse. :(

Not only do we have domain over all animals, we have the duty to be GOOD stewards of our animals, gardens and all that is in the Earth. :D I try to be a good steward/owner/friend to the animals I own and to the free wildlife that is all around me also.

As far as thinking that 'humans' are the center of the universe... well I certainly don't think that. I do not believe anthropocentrically at all, I believe God is the center of the universe :D
