And here are some pictures I took at the store. Look at the two white ones. One looks similar to my European Isabel, while the other is predominantly white with very little orange. Their beaks are red, so they're males, too.

But look at the accents on the Isabel's wings. Does that mean he's young? I mean my European Isabel didn't have those white spots on his wings 2 months ago (yes, me and my gf just realised this, LOL).

Yep now RaduPalanga has put up much better pictures I can now clearly see that the bird is a phaeo,

The earlier pics didn't do the bird any justice and is why I initially thought it was an Isabel but now we know it's a phaeo

At last =D>

Which grey one? You mean the one in the far left in THIS picture?

His beak is red :\ . What do I have to look for in choosing a hen?! Only that black tear under the eyes? Not the beak coloration, as well?

A zebra hen only can be so confusong by her red beak when she is an imaculate white in this case we use the singing aptitude to sex them
For other color the bottom manibill of the beak is orange for hen and bloody red for cok
Hen has not an apparent chest
And doesnt parade what else
You can compare with the drawn picture

RaduPalanda :....No mate, you're first original picture of the two cock finches.....one is a phaeo and the other is a pied both cocks,

these birds that are in the pet shop, this picture you've put arrows on is not the phaeo, this is a European Isabel cock sitting on the nest basket,
The bird directly sitting at the front of the nest ( the grey bird ) is a hen

So the one that has that black tear drop on the cheeks?

Mkay...

It's confusing. Some females have red beaks, some males have somewhat orange`ish beaks :D lol so I gotta use the face marks (tear drop) to distinguish between them...

Oh and haroun the two finch cocks I have right now... they have different singings. If I were to try & distinguish them by their singings alone, I'd say the pied one has a more masculine singing, while the phaeo finch has a more girlish sound. :(

Yea mate for now I personally think that yer best bet is to go by the plain colours and tear drops etc indicating hens :-BD

Yes on some zebras like pure whites the cocks have red beaks and hens have orange, I onestly think you need to learn the genetics of the normal and more common colours first as the sexes are a lot easier to tell the differences otherwise yer just gonna get yerself confused,

My advice mate is to look at the zebra finch society website and have a proper close look and read up on the variety of colours and genetics

To understand the genetics is something that needs to be taken in with time, this is something that can't be learnt overnight

yes males can have different singing it 's normal, but at least they sing wich a hen can't do she only beep (like a car lol in french we say hen claxonne only).
ok the pied was the dominante one why he has a masculine sing , the pheao was the dominated so

in a global way , in the birds world the coks are more bueatifull (more coloured) then hens

i agree it takes me lot of time to be able to distinguish between those red mutations(isa , bbob , bfobbb etc..) but i can say this web site helps me , in two words it resumes what i learnt like the pheao =isa+bb wich i read in a regular answer at a topic lol
