How Many!!

Post by Lauravdm » Thu Sep 23, 2010 8:53 am

Hey all....

I am asking alot of questions today, but my husband and I are off to get finches tomorrow :D
I am getting Zebra's and I was wondering how many I should keep, I have a medium size outside Aviary, any suggestions
I was thinking seen as I was going to breed, that I should just get a pair for now, and a pair of quail....

It very much depends on the size of the aviary. (What some call an aviary other would call a cage... :-)) How big is it?
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

For general purposes of putting X birds into a cage or aviary, there is a calculator under Hosing in the Finch Information Center linked on the left side of the screen.

Don't forget to factor in the babies. One pair very quickly grows into many - and of course you'll want to keep some of the chicks. Welcome to our world

4 adults, 8 fledged and chicks in nest zebra finches
1 gouldian finch
2 grassland yellow finches (found locally in the wild and we call them grass canaries)
2 budgies

Neysa

That why I would just get a pair for now, because I thought if I started out with too many at the beginning I would run into a problem, of having way too many!

Since I moved from Europe to the U.S. I love this site: http://www.onlineconversion.com/ :-)

That would be about 6 by 5 feet. Sounds to me as if that was big enough for more than 1 pair of zebras.

Just curious: Are you talking about button quail? I have some and they are lovely. They do get along great with finches, provided your aviary is hugh enough. (Mine pretty much ignore each other.) What are you going to put on the bottom of the aviary?

I am getting a pair of button quails and I have grass on the bottom of the garden and was thinking of putting some pretty rocks down that I found when we moved in here...

I love my buttons too, very comical and they become very calm near you after a while.
