Cleaning my oven

OK, my oven really needs to be cleaned. It's a self-cleaning oven. My birds are in the living room, adjacent to the kitchen, but with a wall in between. That wall is only a partial wall - it has about 2 feet or so above it before you get to the ceiling (does that make sense? So there's a gap above that wall), as well as there is a space to walk from the kitchen to the living room, of course.
So, fill me in - what do I need to do to keep from killing my birds when I clean my oven on the self-cleaning cycle? I can run the ventilation hood over the oven, and I have a fan that I can put in the kitchen blowing anything from the oven towards an open window. But I'm paranoid - I'd hate to have a clean oven and then find 9 dead birds the next day from the fumes.
Any tips?
