Love the post liz-on removing hulls from seed in a feed dish. I use a hand held hair dryer on low at the cold setting then vacuum up the hulls that fall to the ground. Maybe useful tip for someone.

Good point Kenny!

I know someone (here?) used to blow the hulls out of the seeds dish (just using their mouth) and ended up getting one in their eye and had to go to emerg to have it removed.

Great sticky!

I'd only add that new owners should try find a reputable small bird vet in their vacinity. Its handy to know prior to an emergency. Not all vets are good with finches. Some are not even that keen to look at them.

Helpful hint
Always research the bird species you want to purchase - prior to getting home with them  . See if you have the facility to care for them and provide for their needs. It can save heartache and financial loss later on.

I recently started vacuuming out the hulls with my little kitchen dust buster. If you keep it at the right distance from the seed cup, it only sucks in the empty hulls.

Hi Liz,

Another idea for "Have a first aid kit available which would include flour or cornstarch to stop bleeding, regular pair of human nail clippers (to trim excessively long claws or beaks)"

"include flour or cornstarch or Liquid Bandage to stop bleeding." Stumbled onto this when I ran out of styptic powder. Liquid Bandage hardens in about 30 seconds and stops the bleeding almost instantly sealing the nail to keep germs out for days. Any of the brands should work great!
