What about the coroplast idea? A 4x8 sheet is not expensive and you can cut the size you need. Available at home hardward stores.

Or get a piece of leftover vinyl flooring?
I like a firm plastic, ie the vinyl or coroplast, I find it easier to wash off.

I have tile myself, but what about those plastic sheets that go under desks and office chairs? Would that be acceptable?

I find my self doing a lot of vaccuming. It doesn't bother my finches. I did it when they were sitting last year and they were fine. My males are funny when I vaccum, they all get together and sing and sing..and sing. It seems like its a competition for them to be louder!

I also just vacuum a LOT. Everything comes up from the carpet just fine for me. It just looks a little bad if I let it go.

I have alway vaccumed and last year we got one of those "Top consumer" vaccumes from Sears. Thing works great. It's a bagless so I can see what come up in the container....well...I could start a seed shop from what gets thrown around the place.

This is one reason I want some of the seed hoppers that were recommended and some of the plexiglass for the sides around the cups.

Haha! I'd probably be afraid to see what comes up from my carpet.
