I may adopt some java rice finches, there is a lady near me who is now too old to care for her 8 birds and they need a new home. I've been emailing back and forth with one of her children. I want to talk to my hubby before I jump for it (which is tough to do since I just have to wait around and hope he calls--deployments suck), but I have never seen them around here before, and one can never have too many finches.

Wow sound nice! I am not sure what a java rice looks like but know I haven't seen one yet I didn't like! I just adopted yesterday a lady society finch and my now male is one singing fool...lol So am up to ten finches...

Well I currently have 3 adult zebras and one baby, as well as 2 societies with 4 nestlings. SO... I would be up to 18!! I want to find homes for at least some of the society babies, if not all of them. I could get it down to 14. My husband is going to think I'm nuts when I tell him I want them, but he knows I plan to build a big aviary when we have a house and have lots more finches.

There is a thread someone posted about their tame javas with some great pictures. (The ones I may get will not be tame.)

I hope you can get approval from Hubby to get the birds. If it sounds like a tough sell....tears and whining always works for me....LOL!

The birds would make it easier to deal. Hmm I should tell him that. If I get my mind set on anything bird related I usually get my way. I really hope I hear from him tonight. There is just enough room on my wall where all the other cages are lined up to fit that cage after quarantine (in the next room).

you will not be dissapointed with javas, a very entertaining and facinating species to watch and learn about.

Wow they're very pretty! I am so new to finches am still learning all the varieties.

ps...how long do you quarantine? I should have done that with the nebie society but didn't think of it. So far she's perfect and the lonely male is one happy camper...dreading any babies but the local pet shop here asures me they will take any off my hands I don't want! and trade me like bird seed, etc...so ok.

I will probably quarantine for a few weeks, maybe a month. It sounds like they got excellent care from their original home so I hope I won't encounter any issues.

I'M GETTING THEM!!! I'm so happy, I go pick them up in the morning!!!

My hubby is the best! He was just laughing at me for even asking. He knew it was inevitable that I would get more birds.

Haha he probably would get a good laugh out of that. He loves the birds, too. He just doesn't admit it. He's SO attached to one of our zebras, that is HIS girl.

That's great, beccafigs! I've never had Javas, but they really look interesting. They like paddy rice, I've read, and someone I order from carries it.

I picked up the birds this morning and some of them were in very bad shape. They were in a cramped cage that was far too small, and it is obvious they were allowed to breed without any restriction. There were 4 nests, one with an egg inside, they were filthy and obviously used for far too long. Some of the birds are handicapped, too. One is missing all but one toe on his right foot, and another is missing his right eye. Almost all of them have bad looking tail feathers from the small cage and probable plucking. I split the four that were the worst off into a hospital cage with heat and the four healthy ones are in another cage now. They are acting pretty subdued. They're making a little noise (I already LOVE their noises), but they are laying low, there is a bit of fighting, I guess they are figuring out the pecking order. They've had a lot of activity, the move, new cages, etc. Their cage was FILTHY. I scrubbed the hell out of it in the bath tub. I also went out and got some hemp seed, and bought a case of millet for all the birds to share (I've got 4 cages now, and may need to move a zebra back to solitary), for treats for them.

Geez....you really got some at-risk birds Beccafigs.

But it was just meant to be for you to get them....they will blossom with your loving care!!

I look forward to hearing how they are coming along. I bet after telling your hubby how bad off they were he will be glad you took them into your care.
