My Owl Finch lost its friend need advice :(

Post by hootowl » Fri Apr 18, 2014 8:02 pm

Hi all ,

My Owl finch lost its friend and I wanted to know if it would be ok alone in a cage or should I get it a new buddy?
I have another cage with 3 finches in it , should I take one of those finches out and place with the owl or put the owl with the other 3. The other cage I have is all males, 2 Zebra and 1 Gouldian.
My next question is the photo attached is this a male or female ?? I am saying male from the photos I can see online.

Any and all help is appreciated :D

hootowl...So sorry for the loss of your Owl finch. To me, the owl in this pic looks like a hen. The top breast bar is narrower than the bottom breast bar. But there are experts on the forum who will be WAY more accurate than me  . As for a finch to pair up with your owl...I think your gouldian would be a great match. They are a peaceful species that live well with owls. Another concern would be the cross breeding of zebras and owls, especially since you are unsure of the sex of this owl. Best of luck to you. :)

He/she will need a friend. I would suggest the gouldian also. I would put the gouldian in with the owl, and leave the zebras in the other cage. If the zebras feel like their territory is threatened by a newcomer, they might start getting aggressive.

Thanks for the Advice, I will have to get the Owl a new friend then as the Gouldian is a Male also.

Thanks Ginene for your in put on the sex of the bird. I will see if anyone else steps forward to as what they think it is. I listened to sound clips of Owl finches and this one sounds like a hen, but I am still not 100%.

I would like to know what the sex it is before I get a new friend for him/her.

hootowl...a male gouldian will be fine with your owl, whether it turns out to be male or female. I would try it out and see how they do together. I bet they will make a nice pair :)

Will they not try to mate? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I do not want eggs or babies.
Or will they only mate with there own kind, ex Zebra to Zebra , Owl to Owl ?

As far as I know, gouldians and owls do not tend to cross breed. With owls and zebras, it is possible. The same goes for societies and spice finches. I think your OK with a male gouldian and a female owl, but I'm going to post this question on finchaholics and get back to you asap :)

I tend to agree with Ginene...I would not put a nest in the cage.

So with no nest or house , I would be ok with my male Gouldian and my He/She Owl together ?

Thanks for all your help !

finchmix22@cindy...What sex would you say the owl is in the top pic??? I thought hen based on breast bars...but you guys breed owls and know a heck of a lot better than I ever could.

@hootowl...You are so very welcome :) . I think it's going to work out for you. My owls and goulds live quite happily together. Best of luck and keep us posted :)

Thank you Ginene, We are going to go to my local bird shop today to see if we can find a new friend for the Owl. If not we will try the Gouldine , and make sure never to put a nest in the cage

From Audio clips i have heard of owls, mine does the sounds of a female , That squeaky toy sound. Just peeps no real song from it.
It would be interesting to see what finchmix22 would say to what sex my owl is.
