I know this is a dirty question, but it's got me wondering. lol

I totally expected to have seeds everywhere, but the poop... how one earth do they fling it so far out of the cage?

I reckon it must be some sort of a game, were they compete to see how who can fling it furthest :) , some of the flightier birds are real pros

Hmmm, interesting. My finches don't seem to get it outside of their enclosures at all, except for the societies who will cling to the side of their cage to try and see what's going on in the cage next to them. Curious bunch, they are. And I have a tray that catches it, so no big deal. I have more issues with bath water, and I put Plexiglas skirts around to keep it from splashing out.

I wonder if it has something to do with my cage being so tall... they seem to get it on the floor all around for a good 18" out!

Here's an even more perplexing question: How do they get poop on the cage roof??
I've got the top of the cages covered with a wood bracket that holds the light. So there's no way for them to get poop on the ceiling by landing on the top during free flight.

So somehow, they're getting poop on the ceiling while they're inside the cage!

Damned if I know how they do it! LOL

The seed flinging, I understand. My society finch is especially prone to "snapping" the seeds. When she crushes the seed to remove the hull, it's half in her mouth, half outside her mouth.

So when she snaps it, the part that's outside her mouth goes airborne. It's like it pops apart.

What I've noticed is the finches fly around and poop as they fly or cling to the sides and tops of cages. So, they seem to get their poop all over the cage sides and top too. I find lots of poop and food leftovers on my walls and it does not come off easily! IMO, the Society's are the messiest of the finches, but I have a few parrot finches who make as much of a mess too.

Haha, funny subject! I guess I shouldn't complain. Mine aren't too bad in the poop department.

Don't forget, some of us have tons of finches! Mine are in three double flights, six 30 inch breeder cages and 8 other cages for mixed and juveniles! So, there are so many who can make a mess in my bird room. LOL.

My guys are amazing poop flinging, piggies too...my solution is propping white corregated (forgive my spelling) vinyl boards behind their flights (people use these boards for waterproof signs). They are MUCH cheaper than plexi-glass and are SUPER easy to wipe clean. It's a cheap, scrub proof way to protect painted walls, without detracting from the beauty of your birds :) . The hardwood floors get pooped on daily too...but those are easily cleaned with AviClean and paper towels :)
