What do you all use to put in your nests? I do not want to breed, just have the nest so they are comfy. I have a store bought cottony thing, but realized that they might be able to get strands of that caught around their feet. May have already happened, not sure. So I want to put something else in there.
Thanks a bunch!

Only give the finches nests if they're all one gender, both species, or they'll try to breed and become aggressive to one another. Society and zebra finches will breed together if allowed, and with more than one pair in the cage they will start fighting unless it is a very large cage.

For just playing around, you can get small packages of timothy hay or orchard grass at any pet shop--the orchard grass is a bit softer than the timothy hay. They will use this to line their nest.

I know my zebras are both male, just not sure about the societies. They all love chillin in the nest. Is there anything else I could use for a little cozy spot for them to sleep?

My finches love orchard grass to build their nests. I provide parakeet wooden nest box but I cut the top half side of it (for society finches as they prefer bigger entrance than a hole) and put half inch layer of orchard grass in it and some orchard grass in the cage. My society finches adjust their nests within few hours.

I do NOT put a nest in any cage unless I am breeding.
Birds will do just fine sleeping on a perch.
I have seen nests trigger breeding mode aggression with zebras.
One was a juvenile zebra. He "claimed" the nest and aggressively kept the societies out of and away from the nest. And these birds (societies and juvenile zebra) were together for several months. Well that would not work for my fostering societies, so I removed the zebra from the cage and away from the nest.

You can also use the crinkle paper that is used to line gift bags. Sometimes the dollar store has it, but get the natrual brown or white, not the dyed color, I would be concerned with the dye.

Twinmom084 I have a question where I asked the same but what I currently use is grass, animal hair, hay, shredded tissue and moss.
