What to do, what to do........

Post by Twinmom0804 » Sat Aug 16, 2014 5:37 pm

Well.......my hubby is not a bit happy with the zebras I have. They have a sound that he says grates on his nerves. He likes the societies. He wants me to get rid of the zebras and get a couple more societies. I really like the societies too. I told him I can't just return them to the pet store and I am not gonna let them go free. And I would want them to go to a good home. I don't know what to do. :-(

Put an add on craigslist or ebayclassifieds in your area with some adoption fees & some good pictures of your finches. You will get many replies and then pick the one who you think would provide a good home to your finches. In order to rehome your finches quicky, the adoption fees of your finches must be a bit lower than petsmart or a pet store in your area.

Well... my hubby didn't want me to even have a finch at all in the house, but it's something I really wanted and life is short. So I told him, "What good is living my life if I can only live it within the peremeters of what makes you happy. Then I'm not living my own live, but yours." That seemed to help. LOL! But seriously, the sounds a Zebra finch makes are so quiet and cute, how could anyone be annoyed by that? Good luck finding them a new home.

Do NOT let any bird go free in the wild.
Some birds are considered invasive to the native birds.

I can relate to your husband.
I have/had my zebras in the house, and sometimes they calling did get irritating.

I agree, find them a new home.
I used to take my surplus zebras to a particular pet shop in exchange for some feed.
Alternatively, put the birds into a separate room, that you can close the door on, and keep their calling muffled in that room.

You've gotten some good advice already. If you do decide to rehome them, don't offer them for free on craigslist or similar sites. Snake owners often like to find free finches to use as food for their pets. If there is a price on them, that keeps them safe. And as others said, do not release them into the wild. They would not survive your Ohio winters, or they would fall victim to one of the many predators out there.

Thanks a lot everyone for all the advise. :-)
I was not planning on letting them go free. I know they would not survive the poor little things.
I will probably post on Craigslist and make sure the potential owner has a good home and setup for them.
Thanks again!

You can also list them here in the Marketplace, which show up on search engines and a FF member may want them too. That's a good home. I agree with your husband about the noise, but unless you have a lot of them, it's not bad. My owls make more of meow than the honk of zebras, but they are both poephila; zebras poephila gutta and owls poephila bicheno.

My solution would be ear plugs for hubby.
Seriously though, could you phone your pet shop, explain the situation and ask if you could exchange them for Societies?

Well that's a bummer!

I would give it some time, personally. Just to see if perhaps he can get used to it.
I don't even "hear" my birds anymore; they're just a normal sound.
I've had some awfully grating fosters (*cough* Cockatoos *cough*) but again, within the span of a week or do, you start to not really notice it as much.

Another idea: is there another location within your home where you can place them? Or perhaps only when hubby is around?

Agreed with all the others' advice on rehoming if you decide to go that route.

Hi there.
Regarding Gouldians. I don't find them difficult to keep. They are lovely little birds and as noise goes, they are very quiet. I know that they are expensive (around here $140.00 in pet shop) I am at present on the look out for another male myself, but the price scares me.
They really are sweet birds though. I love their personality and there Is no denying that they are magnificent to look at.

I feel for your husband. I bought a pair of gold breast waxbills and they are the noisest birds I've ever had! They are outside and at 6 am the male start peeping so loud I hear it in the house, he goes on and on for over an hour every morning. it's like a dripping faucet to me. :( There is no "getting used to it" at all. They will soon be given to a friend of mine. :)

That's how it was with one of the zebras. He would start and just go on and on and on!! I was able to return them to the shop I got them from. So all is well! :-)

I purchased a pair of crimson rosellas few years ago and put them in an outdoor aviary. Male rosella used to sing extremely loudly daily for 2 hours early in the morning and then again for 2 hours in the evening before sunset. That noise drove me insane. So I sold them within a week. They were very pretty though. Loudest birds to me are Crimson Rosellas, Lovebirds, and Sun Conures. ~X(
