There are several ways that finch fanciers find and purchase their birds. This poll is about where you purchased your birds and whether the seller continues to support you in the fancy.

The first part of the question is how did you purchase your birds: a petstore? a local breeder? online? a magazine? or was it a gift?

The second part of the question is: are you still getting support and advice from your source?

Thanks. I'm trying to find out what seems to be the best experiences that people have had and how I can best share my birds with the fancy.

I put other. I adopted my three societies from an animal shelter. No continuing support.

Societies Flurry, Errol, Aurora, Albert, and Lyra, along with zebra Max and budgie Alex, are from two different but well-run Petsmart stores.

Societies Apollo, Lizzie, Cirrus, and Sylvan were hatched and raised in my home from store-bought parents.

My canary Steve came from a pet shop distributor selling overstock in Chicago. My female canary came from a downsizing hobbyist a few towns over who had purchased her from a breeder a year before.

My Java pair were purchased at a local upper-end pet shop for an exorbitant price due to their rarity in my locale.

Arthur the parakeet found me - I brought him in after he showed up in the yard lost and starving.

My silverbills came to me via internet ads posted by a downsizing hobbyist.

My spices, fawn zebra, and blue budgie came to me from a friend-of-a-friend of my aunt who was moving and unable to take her pets.

No continuing support from any source.

Based on the recommendation made by my Avian Vet...I only purchase young captive bred birds, from small breeders. All of my finch came from 3 Texas breeders, with the exception of my Green Singer pair, which came from a breeder in Upstate NY. And Yes...all of the breeders provide me with continued support, especially Martie (NY) and Su (Texas) My parrotlet was purchased from a breeder in Connecticut. She was hand raised and 10 weeks old when we brought her home

All my waxbills, parrotfinches and owl finches came from a local breeder/broker, with continued support if I should need it.

My society finches came from various pet shops around town, no support.

My gouldians came from two different local breeders. I suppose they would offer support should I need it.

Most of my birds purchased from local bird marts (no support) and some from local breeders via craigslist (no support) & bay classified (no support).

I have had to buy my gouldians from petshops cause I can't find any breeders in my area.

Wish I could add more options, but the websites polling only allows up to ten options. I probably should have added rescues and shelters.

My two pairs of gouldians came from two different local breeders. I still recieve support from both breeders. They are very helpful in answering any newbie questions I have and seem to be very interested in continuing to see how well their birds are doing.

I am very happy I was able to find local breeders, and that is how I plan to purchase any other birds if I decide to add to my flock I like being able to go see how their birds are kept.
