Finally set up for finches! Good breeder?
Hi everyone! Thanks for the help so far, maybe sometime in the near future I can offer some help. Anyways... I'm finally all set up for breeding some Gouldian finches. Have all sorts of vitamins, medications, supplements, and differing foods. I have full spectrum lights lighting up the 4 cages I have. I have plain closed plastic leg bands, a hand rearing formula and book. Perches, baths, swings, and nest boxes. Everything that I can think of.
So my questions: Where is a good place to buy quality Gouldians? Ever tried Bev's birds? Seems like he has quality birds at reasonable prices. And can I only get the NFSS leg bands if I'm a member? Thanks!

And I would preferably like to breed a RH WB male to a RH WB or RH P/WB female and a BH PB male to a BH PB or PB/WB female.
(I hope I did ok with abbreviations. Still trying to learn genetics.)

Can't help you with the Gouldians, but I can tell you that yes, you must be an NFSS member to purchase the closed metal bands. You can purchase the split bands they offer without being a member.

Bev in Arizona?
Also if you put your location in your profile it will make it easier for us to point out reputable breeders in your ares. I know several (including myself) here in Texas...

Right now I think most people are letting their young go through a moult first. Plus it is really chilly for shipping right now in the mid west. I'm in kansas city and it is getting cold. I know some people ship when it is cold but I wouldn't risk it. Getting on a wait list is good though
I ain't familiar with any breeders . sorry I can't help you there. I am on a wait list for glamgouldians for the coming year.

Airlynok, yeah I wasn't planning on getting any until around spring. I think I'll try Bev's birds. I emailed him, see how it goes I guess.

Birds can be shipped in winter, but it does take some extra planning. You have to watch for the weather in the originating city, the arrival city, and any transit stops along the way. If it is forecast to be moderate in all locations, then it will usually be OK. Be very careful about shipping over holidays, like Christmas and New Year's. Over the holidays, many flights are cancelled, so there aren't as many options available to you.
I had birds shipped on New Year's Eve once. They missed the connecting flight in Houston, and because of the holiday, there was not another flight for 24 hours. They sat in Continental's pet facility for that 24 hours. Then, when they were to be shipped the next day (New Year's Day), the cargo office was not open. I was only able to pick up my birds that day because a supervisor came in and opened the office for me and another customer whose 2 cats had also missed their connecting flight the day before. Otherwise, I would have had to wait yet another day. So I learned my lesson, stay away from holidays when shipping!

Sally thanks for the tips. I know how hectic it gets w/ shipping around holidays. I work in a shipping warehouse. I also don't order or ship the orchids and other plants I grow this time of year. I've had my experiences w/ valuable plants becoming plant-cicles before due to delays.

I haven't personally but I have some birds that were purchased from her and then sold to me. They are excellent birds. I would like to order some more from her when I need new bloodlines...
Here was the post where I got the birds.

I can't find the one where I posted the pics when they got home...
After another five minutes searching... the Gouldians in the first picture came from her.
