Can Finches Distinguish Fake Birds from Real Ones? I posted a colored business card that had a picture of a black headed gouldian finch on to see what my gouldian would do. I didn't think anything would happen, but I still wanted to see for myself. Today, I noticed my bird looking at the card and kind of pecking at it.
Do you think he thought for a second that it was another gouldian or do you think he was just curious? (I'm guessing he was just curious...)

I hung a picture of a yellow gouldian up in my bird room.
One of my female gouldians kept flying all around it and trying to run into it until I had to take it down off the wall. I was afraid she was going to hurt herself.

I don't think they can tell.

They react to mirrors so who knows...On the other hand a mirror will show movement not like a picture. But having said that I remember years ago experiments in the UK of a robin attacking a stuffed cuckoo. And if my memory serves me right a cardboard cut out of a cuckoo or another male robin brought the same reaction.Robins are known to be VERY territorial...so maybe it depends on the type of bird.
