Might have more males than females

Post by LauraBird » Mon Jun 22, 2015 10:23 am

Hello,

I just brought 4 new finches home. I thought they were 3 males and 1 female, which would have made my ratio 5 males to 5 females. In fact, when I lifted the blanket on the cage when I got them home, I saw one of the 3 known males sing, court, and seemingly mount the supposed female (who is a silver, so gender not totally obvious).

I just witnessed the silver I had assumed was female sing and court another known female.

Is it possible that the first male mistook the silver for a female? Or the female is showing male behaviors? They are all pretty young, but now I'm worried I have a 6 male to 4 female ratio which of course will cause problems.

Thanks, Laura
Laura

We have 2 kids, 2 dogs, a 75 gallon fishtank, 4 mice, 2 Society Finches, and 12 Gouldian finches - BHPBGB male, 2 BHPBGB black headed females (one is their chick), RHPBGB male, 2 RHPBGB females (one a "dirty" redhead), YHPBGB male, YHPBGB female, YHWBYB male, SHWBBB male, SHWBSB (silver) male, and SHWBSB (silver) female.
