Fertile eggs or not?
I took a pic of 6 Gouldian eggs about a week and a half into incubation. I thought the darker ones were fertile. I've ended up with 2 hatchlings so far and they appear to come out of the white eggs. Can anyone tell me what I'm looking at and why. I think I completely misdiagnosed.

Re: Fertile eggs or not?
If you enlarge the first picture, you can clearly see a large air pocket on the top egg, that means infertile. The air pockets are even more obvious in the second photo. The two fertile eggs are the more opaque eggs. Congrats on the hatchlings!

3 eggs are clear/infertile and the 4th egg (far right) is dead in shell.

spn1979 - Congratulations! I would remove all but one of these eggs. Leave one as a 'hot water bottle' to help keep the hatchlings warm.

Congratulations!
Personally with how those other eggs look I would remove them if your birds will tolerate it. They look more rotten then dried out to me.
Good luck

Re: Fertile eggs or not?
I'll remove them tommorrow break them open and post pics.
This hen kinda layed abnormally for me. Could that contribute to the poor hatch rate?
First she seemed to take a long time after mating started to start laying. Closer to 2 weeks and seemed to start puffing up. I went to work at 4 in the afternoon with no egg. At 2am when I got home there was an egg, bye midmorning the same day there was another. So she laid 2 in less than 24 hours. Laid a 3rd skipped a day than laid 3 more. She seemed to be an afternoon layer. Not a morning person I guess lol.

I'd be cautious breaking these eggs open. At times these eggs can be pretty smelly, so if you choose to do so, I'd be doing it outdoors.

I went to grab the eggs and found one of the babies misssing. I was so upset i decide to leave the nest alone. 2 eggs eventually found therye way out and were clear. The baby is due to fledge any hour now and the supposed dis egg is still in there. Perhaps ill crack it oped outside after it fledges.
Thx steve
