How many days can gouldians stay in travel cage?

Post by tobyrosie » Sun Nov 01, 2015 7:15 pm

I will be traveling to NY and would like to buy some gouldians while there. Can 5 gouldians stay in a small travel cage for 3 days? Have you done this before?
Thanks.

About 7 X 9 X 11 maybe? It would have to fit under seat on plane .

I wouldn't attempt it. You're likely to lose some of them.
I would recommend purchasing a larger cage once you get to NY, and keep them in that , until ready for airport. I'd bring the cage along in cargo.

How long is the flight?

Plus, I would double check to see if your allowed to bring them on the plane (in case of feather allergies, etc).

you could get a small cube cage that is a bit bigger still small enough to fold down into a suitcase...you could transfer them into it once at your destination.

If you are using a cage for under the set I would cover it or put it into a small crate that can go under the seat. All the hussle and bussle in the airport can upset them...

Sally traveled with birds, she might be able to help you.

It is a direct flight from NY to NC so flight time is 1 1/2 hours. Trying to find out if American Airlines allows birds.

tobyrosie American Airlines only allows dogs and cats in the cabin, they do not allow birds. Before the merger, U.S. Airways allowed birds in the cabin, so I was hoping that after the merger, since U.S. Airways was the dominant carrier in the merger, they would follow the U.S. Airways rules as far as birds. Not to be, at least so far.

Of the major carriers, only Delta and United allow birds in the cabin, as far as I know. They will charge a fee ($125 to $150) for one kennel.

When I was visiting my sister one time, and picking up birds at a mart during the visit, I brought a small cage which was collapsed in my checked luggage. I could then set this cage up at my sister's house to keep the birds for a few days. Once I was ready to leave, I transferred the birds to a very small travel cage that would fit inside a duffel carry-on bag, collapsed the other cage, and placed it inside my checked luggage. It worked out, but was a bit of a pain.

For travel, I have used two different travel cages. The first one is the sturdy travel cage when you scroll down the page, and I could fit two of those in a duffel bag that would fit under the seat.

The second is my favorite, and I can easily fit 4 of those in a duffel bag, perhaps even 6 if I really tried. Each little carrier holds one bird.

I have traveled with birds quite a few times, since I am retired from one of the airlines that allows birds in the cabin. I have actually traveled once on an airline that doesn't allow birds in the cabin, it was an emergency, and I simply didn't say anything to anyone. I didn't even realize at the time that I wasn't supposed to have those birds in the cabin. One good thing about finches inside a duffel bag, it is very dark, they never make a sound!

If you decide to take birds on an airplane, I can tell you exactly how I have done it, it does take a little planning and thought.

Love the traveler on the finchconnections site. Would the bird need to know how to drink from a drinker for that to work?

Debbie, I have a few of these, there is no way to hang or insert a cup of water.... you can try to improvise by hot gluing a small cup of some sort like a condiment cup with a natural sponge in it and fill that with water, one tube is for water, the other for seed. The carrier is nice since the bird is not exposed on all sides and seems calmer. I will get some interior pictures for you, it comes with a mall plastic grate you can opt not to use. the door panel slides up and down.

I love it but would worry if you bought a bird not familiar with tubes if it would drink. I especially like the solid sides, draping a towel over cages when transporting help so much to keep them calm. Even in the car the flicker of lights is scary for them, a towel does wonders.

the small carriers above can be inserted in this container... the carrier itself is small and the perch is inserted right in front of the water and seed tube. There is space on the floor between the tubes where you could adhere a small cup of water with a sponge.

this is an example of my travel cages (brick shape) inserted inside a cat litter tray, I cover it with a towel in the car and are a show since even walking down the aisle and people staring into cages to see what you have can upset them, I keep it covered. Birds stay calmer for sure. The cat pan works well since the bird are not being swayed back and forth as you carry the travel cage by the handle...
at shows I see the bird kind of knock off balance by people using the handle and the cage moves back and forth and it concerns me... or they put no paper on the bottom, no cover and the bird is exposed, confused, scared.

You are welcome Debbie. I also found that the little travel cages do fit nicely in some of the dog and cat carriers.
