My young canary sleeps at night on the swing, that came with the cage. It is not a wood swing, so the perch of it is a thin-ish plastic. I wanted to buy a wooden swing, but am afraid that he/she may be too accustomed to this one.
Is there something safe that I can wrap around the perch that is safe and more comfortable? I have seen sand paper covers for perches, but have read as well that they are not good for their feet.

Sand paper covers are too rough for their feet. Most birds will adjust very quickly to a wooden swing.

I think most birds- even those in the wild - search for a safe and secure place to roost every night. Mine seem to like the security of a "sleep station" mounted at the highest point in the aviary. Since canaries don't seem to like sleeping in a completely enclosed next box you might want to consider building something like this on a smaller scale - maybe only 2 or 3 compartments depending on the number of birds you have. AABA has some like this that you can easily assemble yourself.
