Pine-Sol (And other cleaning products)

Knowing that the use of pine bedding should be avoided for birds led me to wonder if Pine-Sol is safe to use in the same household as finches? Obviously, it's not for use in or near the cage, but are the hydrocarbons harmful enough that vapors drifting from another room could cause damage? What other cleaning chemicals are dangerous enough that I need to cut them out of the cleaning routine?

Thanks!

Here is an article about household dangers:

As long as you are careful, many household cleaning products can be used around your house. When cleaning directly around your birds, you have to exercise a lot more caution. Many use vinegar solutions to clean around their cages, some use bird-specific cleaners. For disinfection, I like a product called Virkon-S, but there are similar products that are safe to use. If they are sold by one of the online vendors, they are usually OK.

In the rest of my house, I happen to like Simple Green, and I've never had a problem using it.

Sally, have you used Simple Green for cleaning wooden floors? Or do you have an alternative recommendation? That's my big use for the Pine-Sol, to be honest. Definitely need to find a replacement for the Pine-Sol for use in bird areas!

Celeris I only have laminate or tile flooring in my house, no real wood, but I have used Simple Green on the tile. I have to watch what I use on laminate, but I see quite a few products in the store for cleaning wood floors. Perhaps some of our members who have wood floors will have some advice on what they use.

I use white vinegar full strength to spray perches and wire cage bottoms while birds are still in cage, they are not harmed. It creates an acidic environment, harmful to many bad pathogens.

Also wanted to add I have been using fine pine bedding as a base for the Goulds boxes for many years without any attributable harm. They are the poorest nest builders that I keep, often laying on bare cardboard, so it gives a cushion for the eggs. The other species add on to the pine base with grass, cocofiber etc.
