Wing fluttering - what is this all about ?

Post by JerseyGuy » Sat Jul 16, 2016 10:35 am

My 2 Males sit on their perch and "flutter" their wings lightly. I don't know what this is about.
Are they Hot or what ? It's very odd. Has anyone else seen this in their birds ?

A little late to this party buy hey ho!

Someone recently mentioned this to me when we were watching some of their canaries doing this and according to them, it's just because they are feeling frisky!

I've seen my siskins do this (quite close behaviour-wise to canaries as it turns out canaries can foster their babies).

If my finches do it though, it's usually because they've got a sore wing and are working it some - in my own unscientifically proven opinion.

Anyway, to conclude, I don't think its anything to be concerned about ... its just fun to watch :)

wing fluttering can also be a internal protozoa/parasites...they can get into the brain and cause neurological symptoms....slight wing fluttering is one.

What do the droppings look like?

are either thin, sharp keel bone?

Wing fluttering is normally a sure sign of birds coming into breeding condition, if birds are kept indoors the birds can therefore come into breeding condition at any time of the year,

This motion is normally very common with cock canaries and I've had many cock birds do this when I was very much into breeding and showing canaries,

Incidentally your two Gouldians are both cock birds and makes me think that this is probably what is happening even more so,

If this is the case don't worry as this is perfectly normal as a lot of British finches do this aswell :D
