A general question to all members. Does anyone provide music or Birdsongs to their finches?

I decided to download Bird Sounds and Relaxing Songs of Birds so that I could play it in the background for my two Gouldians. Don't know if they like it, but I'm enjoying it.

I'll always have a radio on low in me birdroom when I'm doing me daily routine etc and when I'm in the birdroom for a few hrs cleaning the cages etc but that is more for my benefit than anything,

Being onest I can't realy see the birds being particularly bothered eaither way,

However if you've ever specialised in breeding birds purely for song as I have on and off over the years you can use training tapes to teach the young finches or mules to sing correctly from an early age as you don't want them to copy any other bird sounds or song, this would be critical if you want highly prized singing birds as I once did have,

The prices for singing British goldfinches used to be ridiculously high, around £250 - £300 per bird,

I no longer specialise in this now as my main interest is the breeding and exhibiting of waxbills and African finches

My birds love to make their own music but for the past few years I've subscribed to an internet radio station called Calmradio.com
They have quite a few genres to choose from but the one I like the best is simply called "Positively". This is very soothing, up-beat background music - not the boring elevator type music you hear in department stores. You can try this station for free indefinitely but they do break in with commercials for their own station until you actually subscribe.

For about $5.00 a month the station streams tastefully selected, commercial free music into my computer and then it goes by WIFI to 2 separate stereo amplifiers. From there it's hard wired out to 11 pairs of speakers all over the house, gardens and the 3 aviary spaces.

Each speaker pair has on/off controls and there are 4 or 5 remote volume controls that I picked up at Radio Shack and located in different areas.

I also have an extensive music collection on about 20 ITUNES playlists on my computer. One playlist the birds seem to enjoy is simply called "Aviary". It contains a few hundred songs that I really like, along with some canary training spots included for the winter when the canaries start to practice.

All this creates a great ambiance when I'm entertaining others or when I need to spend a lot of time in one place or the other (like here at the computer).

It's a little easier for me, as I only have to try and soothe and entertain 2 Gouldian finches, but what I have done is download strictly 'Bird Songs' from the Gardens and Forests, and I hook up my MP3 player to a speaker and just play the bird sounds to my Gouldian finches. Hopefully it is soothing for them.

I haven't done this, but whenever I have gone online to find bird songs, the birds in my living and dining rooms immediately start singing.

Incidentally for 3 years on the trot about 25 years ago I used to DJ 3 nights a week up in the city of London in most of the top London night clubs and so my music vocabulary is massive, I used to play a lot of house music then and still luv some of the old school stuff today

Nowadays when I'm out in me birdroom I listen to the very well known electro music YELLO and also ENIGMA and GENESIS etc aswell as me REGAE,

I tried an experiment last year with one of my best singers. He's a 10 year old clear red factor named Stevie-Ray. That's pretty old for a canary and since he is now completely blind, he has his own apartment with low perches and all the best food and treats close by.

Anyway, since he lives close to my laptop playlists, I decided to set up some small speakers for him and play some different types of music to see if I can get a response. Turns out he really likes the vibrato of male tenor voices like Andrea Bocelli.

Here's a shot of some birds flying in from the main bird room in response to some pieces from Puccini's Tosca.

To be honest, they also respond well to the sounds of a vacuum cleaner, water hose and a training CD called "Feathered Phonics"

I was surprised to find on I-Tunes a nice selection of Albums dedicated to Bird Sounds:
I downloaded selections from 'Relaxing Songs of Birds', 'Popular Backyard Birds',
'Bird Sounds', 'Songbirds: Park & Garden' and 'Songbirds'...

But right now the 2 boys are just to vocal this morning, they would drown out the
music. They are chirping and singing their hearts out this morning for some reason.

Patrick, I don't have finches but I have 4 canaries. Two birds are in the living room where there is a lot of activity and noises and two in a spare room which does not get a lot of activity. I find the ones in the spare room liven up when I turn on the radio, and they like to try to pick up certain notes that will make them start to sing. I just have a station on that plays new releases. My birds also sing and chirp when I run the vacumm .

It's an interesting question, and I've been wondering the same thing. Some days I'm playing a "nature" station on Pandora for the Zebras while I'm at work. It's classical and/or nature sounds like brooks and streams and rain and occasionally quiet birds singing. Other days I leave it silent (figure it's good to rotate).

The last few afternoons when I get home I've been turning on a YouTube video that's just audio of zebra finches "singing". My three go absolutely nuts and start beeping and meeping and jumping around, their little heads twisting in circles as they try to figure out who they're talking to. It doesn't seem to be upsetting or agitating them. The activity seems purely curious, and I THINK it's a positive thing. They don't respond as enthusiastically to other types of finches singing or just general bird song, but they do sit up and take notice.

I play music for my canary, she gets all riled up. Doesn't matter what it is either. Miles Davis to minor threat, she likes it all. Also, I used to play her canary songs but my friends have convinced me that is evil since she's an only bird (although she did seem to like it).

Today I found out that I have good Scottish Zebra finches. They went crazy over some Pipes and Drums. I was quite proud.

I saw some research once, about Canaries, that said adult Canary song was genetic and not learned. Young birds would imitate sounds, but breeding Canaries would revert back to their genetic song.

Research isn't the same as experience. Do any of you hear environment sounds (horn, whistle, chime, or the like) in your older birds?
