Perhaps the light was flickering? Birds can see at a higher frame-rate than humans, so maybe the birds were bothered by something no one else could see.

I have a daylight bulb that has a shade that faces up so light aimed at ceiling because I was concerned the brightness would hurt my birds eyes. They r happy when it comes on but jst in livening/ perking up.

When I turn on the same type bulb about 15 feet away that faces downward from overhead they usually all start chirping in chorus sort of like they consider it the sun coming up.
Sometimes its a short chorus and sometimes it lasts occasionally to the point I will just turn it off so they will stop.

Some items that kept my finches interested (toys):

Pictures below for store toys society, zebra and canary have liked.

Plus shoe strings (they especially like the hard ends, tie one end to cage and they play tug of war with it and nibble on edge)

Ribbon (example, ones that come on birthday ballons)
Attach same as above.

Crincled paper / bits of paper

Twist ties (Not bread ties).
Watch to see not breaking through to inside. My society love these especially and their little beaks don't break through, they love to play tug of war with them. I attach to ends of some of the other toys pictured below.

Some like shreading a cotton ball.

My society sat a lot like bumps on a log. Toys helped liven them up.

Canary favorite ribbon
Also the silverware shiny toy.

And mirrors and swings

When I clean cage, after I put a bit of their favorite bird seed or small pieces of millet seed (what breaks off and ends up at bottom of bag) for them to forage which they really get excited about.

They esp like the open bird bathe. When they see me with it in my hand for bath time they start chirping loudly.
