Toasty birds
My birds got overly toasty this morning.
My new thermostat that I've had for 2 weeks went haywire and heated the Livingroom from 69 to 82 before I woke up from the heat (my room was at 91) and turned the heater off.
In about 4 hrs the Livingroom went back down to 71 since it's the cooler room in the apartment.
My society finches seemed ok.
But the parakeets r shaky.
I turned on the heat 1 degree and it seemed to help some but they still shake a bit. Not sure if they feel cold or just stressed.
I know the roller coaster up and down not good for birds.
Society finches seem to be handling it ok.
Is there something I can do to help parakeets?
I have liquid vitamins but they don't drink much.
I could put it in their bath water but not sure if they should bathe today and it would stain them if they did try to bathe with the vitamin drops in the bath water.
The weather outside is 61

I don't know anything about parakeets, but that temperature range should not have affected the finches at all. I'm surprised it bothered the parakeets, I thought they were pretty hardy birds. I wouldn't put the vitamins in their bath water if it is going to stain them. Sorry I can't help more.

Sally - thank you, I won't place the vitamins in their bathe.
They r doing better this afternoon. No shaking.
I too hadn't realized how sensitive to temperature parakeets were.
They seem to be more sensitive to cold.
Surprising that finches r much hardier, which is nice.

Seeing as Budgies are natives of Australia, I don't think the temperatures which you described should really bother them. What might have bothered them is temp going high high, then dropping rather quickly.
I would offer them some water for a bath, and fresh cool drinking water.
I think they should be alright

lovezebs - thank you, that makes sense they wouldn't like the fast drop back down, livingroom has large single pane windows and drafty outside doors.

Well that is good news and I'm glad to hear it.
The only thing that I could think of, was the sudden change of temperature, and it looks like that's what it was.

Re: Toasty birds
lovezebs - yes the cooling was too fast for them.
it would have been better to have slowed down the cooling. But since the Livingroom is the coolest room while it was 82 at the highest, the rest of the apartment was much higher up to 91. Was glad the weather was cool so it went down fairly quickly.
But too quickly for the parakeets.
So glad they're not shaking any more. Had me worried.
