Java finch moulting

Post by Albinosilver » Tue Jun 06, 2017 8:36 pm

My java hen (already in full adult colour) is undergoing a moult. She's looking really patchy around the head and chest and seems to be growing a new tail entirely. How often do adult javas moult? I didn't know exactly how old she was but I'm assuming she must be over a year (maybe two?) if she's moulting again.

I was originally planning on breeding her with my male and they're still in together. She hasn't shown any interest in breeding so far, likely due to the moult, but the two are getting along well. I never see any sort of fighting. Should I keep them together or separate until she is done?

Keep them together. Mine molt about twice a year, but usually don't notice it much except for more feathers on the floor. My female sometimes losses a lot around her head, but they come in quickly. She losses her tail too. Javas like other Javas and should not be kept alone. You're lucky they get along so well.
