Questions regarding infertile eggs and fake eggs.

Post by livinonaprayer » Thu Oct 23, 2008 2:34 pm

I have a few questions regarding infertile and fake eggs. I have a zebra pair in one cage without a nest. Their babies which are all girls (thank goodness) are in a separate cage. I know you guys are the experts so I have to come here to find out.

1. When the single females lay eggs should I remove them immediately from the cage?

2. I don't want the female of the pair to have any more babies. If she does lay eggs somewhere what should I do with them?
Is this when I should replace them with fake eggs? My understanding is that she'll not want to lay again too soon and then she'll just abandon the fake eggs.

3. Do I have to use the actual fake eggs or is there something else I can use. I think all I would need is maybe three or four.

One more question...At what age do the zebras stop laying eggs?

I tried searching the forum for some info but I was coming up empty.
So I appreciate any help I can get. You guys are the best. :)

removing the eggs every second or third day would be ok, if they have a nest remove that as well.
take her eggs out also, throw them away (rubbish bin) using fake eggs just encourages the female to sit on the nest when she doesnt need to.
again take the nest away and all nesting materials.
to my knowledge (very limited) zebras lay/breed till they lay down with their legs in the air and stop breathing
Addicted to Finches, yes I do admit it.
I pray they never find a cure.

I agree with Mickp - Zebra finches will be happy without any nest. Discard any eggs you may find.

Thanks Mick. I thought that the fake eggs will help her to not lay right away after her own eggs were laid. Thanks for setting me straight. :D
I haven't had a nest in the pairs cage but they look like they're in their amorous mood.
So it looks like those little zebras are life long breeders. Sheesh! #-o
Thanks again.

Thanks a bunch. I don't have a nest in the pairs cage but there is a little basket in the girls cage. They like to sleep in it. Once in a while I'll find a broken egg but that's about it. It's okay to leave their basket in the cage isn't it?

btw, I like your website. :D

Yes it's okay to leave the basket (it's a nest to them) in there but they will continue to lay eggs.

Thank you for visiting my website. :D
