Do zebras go bettter when they are different colours

Post by Fraza » Sat Nov 04, 2017 9:36 am

Just wondering if u have a pair of zebras do they go better if the are different for example would a pure white and a normal grey, get on better than two normal greys or is it just how sociable an individual is .

It may be a stupid question but just wondering haha

Fraza

There are no stupid questions [-X .

I honestly have never found this to be the case. I have some mixed pairs, of whites and greys, some cfw pairs, and some others. It all depends on the personality of the individual birds, not so much the colour of the mutation.

I have found though, that the normal greys in general, tend to be overall more aggressive in their behavior than the other mutations. Just my own personal observation.

Fraza

Colour has absolutely nothing to do with wheather birds get on better together or not,

However the normal greys are the dominant colour factor of all zebra mutations and from personal experience over a lot of years and handling an awful lot of zebras I'd say that the normal greys appear to have slightly more dominance about them when mixed with other zebras,

I've not really ever noticed any of the other colours to show dominance, zebras will generally show authority and dominance regardless to whatever colour they may be

The only time that I've seen color a factor is with fledglings.
For some reason, the hen will sometimes start to pick on the white or pied fledgling. When this happens, I had to separate the family; dad with the white and pied, mom with the others.

As was said, aggression seems to be individual.

But in one case, aggression seemed to have been passed on from mother to offspring. All the offspring from this one aggressive hen were AGGRESSIVE, and I could not put them with any other zebra. After that one clutch, I stopped breeding her.

I have also had "buddies," where one bird would turn against the other, and in one case KILL the other bird.

I did not have enough zebras to validate Elana's comment that greys are more aggressive.

But in general, I had enough problem with aggressive behavior that out of frustration, I finally decided to stop breeding zebras.

Yeh it’s strange because i think sometimes the odd ones out are picked on or not paired up for breeding for example I have 6 zebras and there’s a white female and the other males all want to breed with my normal grey instead of my B.B. and my white which I find strange because they share beds with there own pairs but want her, maybe cos she’s younger
