Sexing Zebra finches

Post by Flight Feathers » Tue Dec 12, 2017 6:49 pm

Hi there,
I have 5 baby zebra finches
1 is a male because I hear him singing often but I am unsure about the others. They are 8 and 1/2 weeks old. 2 of them are fawns and are still showing no signs of male markings. When do juvenile males usually get their markings and if any of the others are males should they be singing by now?
Thanks :-)

When I bred zebras my baby males had orange outlines on their cheeks by the time they left the nest.

Okay thanks. I am thinking these 2 fawns to be females then.

They were over 2 months when I sold them and still not even the faintest cheek patches. I would guess the fawns to have been females. I sold them as unsexed to the pet shop Anyway- they just put them all in one cage.

in this case even the mother is fawn they could be hen , because father was split for fawn
fawn is sexlinked
no mutant father crossed fawn mother u ll got , all split for fawn males ,and all not mutant hen
split for fawn dad cross fawn mother u ll got , 25 % split for fawn males , 25% fawn males , 25% not mutant hen , 25% fawn hen

True I forgot about the father being split to fawn- which makes sense that my fawns would only be males when my fawn female was with her last mate which was a normal pied.
