Hey Guys it's me Nick again. Today I have some good news and a question.
First the good news. Today I gave my main cage of zebras their first taste of freshly chopped apple. Looks like they love it but they won't feed the kids any and the kids don't know how to eat it yet. Kinda funny to watch.
Now for the question. A while back I separated the kids of a previous clutch from the parents because dad was getting a little mean. How do I know when it's safe to put Pearl (the only brother left (read older postings)) back in the main cage with everyone else and not have a huge risk of dad attacking again? He looks so lonely in the small cage sitting next to the others but I want to know how I can tell it's safe to put him back in.

FinchLover&Breeder I would put one of your new chicks from this clutch with the older brother first so there’s two of them make sure it’s a boy so they don’t breed and then introduce them together so Dad doesn’t just see him as a easy target and it’s good they are eating apple but it has no massive nutritional value to the chicks so don’t be worried if they aren’t feeding it to them

ok. The chicks are about a month old and the brother is at least 1 1/2 years old I think. so just catch one of the babies and hope the brother will feed it when I put them together?

Dont remove the juveniles from their parents until they are completely weaned (eating and drinking on their own). Typically they must be fed by the parents for about 2 weeks after they jump from the nest.

FinchLover&Breeder oh no I didn’t realize the chicks where that young leave the chicks till they can eat them selves and they are drinking like Babs has just said

and when the parents stop feeding them then catch one and put it with the brother, the brother is going to have to wait a few more weeks but it will be fine once it’s done
It’s usually bout 6 weeks when they stop being fed

FinchLover&Breeder yeh he will be okay alone some people leave a finch alone all it’s life so yours can last about a month

simple rule the juveniles could be removed after 6-7week of age (3 -4 week after the first jump from the nest) .
put the whole clutch in the brother cage (aviary) like this he couldn't have a lonely bird as target to chase.
